Halloween Hosting: Must-Haves for the Ultimate Halloween Party at Home

20th October 2026

Halloween is the perfect excuse to bring friends and family together for an evening of spooky fun, good food and a little bit of fright. And if you’re hosting this year, your home is about to become the star of the show.

From creating a suitably spooky entrance to transforming your open-plan kitchen and dining space, there are plenty of ways to give your home a Halloween makeover. Whether you’re planning a family-friendly afternoon or a grown-up gathering that goes into the night, here are our must-haves for hosting the ultimate Halloween party at home.

Set the scene outside

The Halloween experience should begin before your guests even reach the front door. Carved pumpkins are a classic Halloween decoration. Place them by your front door or use them to create a spooky pathway to your home. For an atmospheric glow, LED candles are ideal without the worry of real flames. Hanging ghosts or bats, a skeleton or two, and simple outdoor lighting can also give your guests a spooktacular welcome.

Create a spooky space for entertaining

Transform your living room, open-plan kitchen and dining area into the perfect Halloween party setting with a few well-placed decorations. Think:

  • Black and orange cushions
  • Fairy lights, especially in orange or purple
  • Faux cobwebs
  • Spooky figures, from ghosts and spiders to bats
  • Autumnal foliage and miniature pumpkins
  • Halloween-themed tablecloths, plates and napkins.

If you want to go the extra mile, don't forget the bathroom! A skeleton in the bath, bats on the mirror or Halloween-themed hand towels and soap dispensers are sure to make your guests smile.

Build the perfect Halloween playlist

No party is complete without the right soundtrack. Start with Halloween classics such as Monster Mash, Ghostbusters and Thriller, alongside spooky film soundtracks. Mix in some upbeat party favourites, too, to keep everyone entertained and the atmosphere lively throughout the evening.

Serve up some suitably spooky food

Halloween is a great opportunity to have a little fun with your menu. Try these ideas, if you dare!

  • Mummy sausages: Wrap sausages in strips of pastry to create a mummy effect
  • Monster pizzas: Use your favourite toppings to create spooky faces
  • Ghostly cupcakes and biscuits: Decorate with orange or purple icing, or get creative with black cats, ghosts and other Halloween characters
  • Graveyard brownies: Decorate chocolate brownies with crushed biscuits and little chocolate tombstones.

For drinks, serve Halloween-inspired mocktails or cocktails in dramatic glasses, such as goblets, or add ‘poison’ labels to bottles for a playful touch. Orange slices, blackberries and spooky-shaped ice cubes make the perfect finishing touches.

Finish with the little details

The best Halloween parties are often the ones where the smallest details make the biggest impression.

Put a bowl of Halloween treats by the front door and set up a photo corner with a spooky backdrop, masks and props. Scatter a few pumpkins around your home and use warm, low-level lighting to create an atmospheric glow.

If you have children attending, consider a Halloween treasure hunt around the house or garden to keep little monsters entertained.

And don't forget to give your guests somewhere comfortable to sit. After all, no matter how impressive the decorations are, a successful party ultimately comes down to good company, good food and a home that makes everyone feel welcome.

So, light the pumpkins, turn up the music, put the spooky snacks on the table and get ready to welcome your guests.

Happy Halloween from McDermott Homes!
